Editor’s Note: In celebration of Le French May, we invited our ENTERTAINER HK colleague and “Meme King,” Benoit, to share his thoughts on what it feels like to be French in #HomeKong. Check him out on Instagram @bzoetelief and read his take below…
Knowing how to count from 1 to 5 in Cantonese
Forever struggling with “r” and “the” in English
no matter how long we’ve been speaking English.
In our minds, how HK people react whenever we ask them
whether something is a dim sum or a dumpling.
Being flagged whenever we speak in English.
Dreading $5 coins as change.
When friends back home ask us whether we have non-French speaking friends here.
Pretending to not be French when speaking in English with other French people.
(Success rate: 0%)
Feeling the need to start our story from the Ice Age to simply talk about
what happened to us yesterday.
When the staff greets us back at 7-11
Telling everyone we’re from Paris to make it simpler, although we’re not.
Overtaking other pedestrians when walking on Queen’s Road.
That feeling when we’re coming home
from Tai Long Wan.
