The quick travel guide to Barcelona

Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain (Madrid is the capital, although Barcelona’s popularity means it’s often mistaken for the capital of Spain).

Barcelona is a popular tourist destination around the world. Overseas visitors travel from Asia, Australia and Canada to try the city’s tapas and wine.  From family travellers to cruise ship crowds and backpackers, Barcelona is a destination for every type of tourist.

Planning your trip to Barcelona

  • Best time to visit: Spring and Autumn are mild, sunny and less expensive. Unlike the Summer season, off-peak periods are ideal for tourists as accommodation and attraction prices are lower. Summer is more costly, and you should expect crowds.

  • Language: Spanish is the official national language of Spain. Some Barcelona residents speak Catalan, so you may see signs and menus written in one or the other.

  • Currency: Euro is the currency in Spain. Money exchange kiosks are available, but it may be cheaper to exchange money before you leave.

  • Getting around: Public transport in Spain (the metro, bus, and tram networks) are all safe and easy to use.

Barcelona travel tips:

  • Major Barcelona attractions like the Sagrada Familia and the Picasso Museum get busy quickly. Plan ahead and book tickets before you go.
  • Tipping in Spain is not customary but it will help the local community. A small tip (5% of your meal) is appreciated but is not necessary.
  • If you’re a museum fan, plan your visit for or the first Sunday of every month, when they’re free throughout the city.
  • If you’re looking for lunch, find restaurants serving a menú del día. This Spanish ‘meal deal’ includes two dishes, bread, coffee or dessert, all for one low price.
  • Purchase a T-10 travel card if you’re using public transport, it’s 30% cheaper than buying separate tickets.
