Heritage Day – Make it a long weekend!

Just like the Irish have St Patrick’s Day, the French have Bastille Day and Australians have Australia Day, us Saffas have Heritage Day!

Nicknamed the Rainbow Nation for its culturally diverse population, South Africa has a lot to celebrate on this day. With 11 soon to be 12 languages when sign language is officially recognised as an official language, many religions and ethnically very diverse this day are about bringing up and celebrating our differences but mostly what brings us together!

Celebrated each year on the 24th of September, Heritage Day, also known as National Braai Day, because let’s face it – there’s nothing more South African than a Braai!

National Braai Day was developed by Stellenbosh Native Jan Scannell or ‘Jan Braai’ who is now known as who quit his day job in finance to make Braaiing the one thing one thinks of on this day! It’s all about the boerewors (farm sausage), Ostrich Sosaties and even some veggie option going on the braai washed down with a beer or some fantastic local wine.

This year Heritage Day is on a Tuesday, so if you plan it right and take Monday off, you’ve got yourself a very sweet 4-day weekend! Perfect for taking your loved one, kiddies or a few friends and hit the road. Make this Heritage Day all about discovering something new right here in South Africa! It doesn’t matter where in the country you spend the day, but wherever you are making sure to look up where the heritage day activities are happening!
