A Hipster’s Guide To Amsterdam’s Best-Hidden Spots

From bikes and canals, to hipster neighbourhoods and museums, Dutch capital city Amsterdam is often known as the “Venice of the North”. There’s plenty to see and do here – apart from the regular attractions we’ve all heard about. Contrary to popular belief, this city is full of secrets and hidden gems that you can explore. We’re pretty sure other travellers haven’t discovered all of them yet! If, like us, you’re over everything mainstream and you love a good off-the-beaten-track adventure, here’s a hipster’s guide to Amsterdam’s best-hidden spots.

The Wine Cellar

Treat yourself to a glass of fine Argentinian wine at The Wine Cellar. This cosy wine cellar is located right underneath Amsterdam’s historic New Church on Dam Square. To get access to this hidden bar, you have to go through a bakery, followed by a spiral staircase. And if the thought of wining and dining in a hidden part of a church excites you, you can also check out Koffieschenkerij de Oude Kerk!

Torensluis & Het Spinhuis

You’ve probably had a drink or two under Amsterdam’s sunshine at Cafe Van Zuylen, or cycled past Torensluis dozens of times without knowing that an old prison cell was lying beneath your feet! This hipster area of Torenluisburg and Het Spinhuis is where you’ll find students using the empty space for outdoor picnics, pirate radio broadcasts and film nights.

Vondelbunker

Nothing is more secret than an underground bunker! The Vondelbunker is an old atom hideout tucked away underneath a bridge in Vondelpark. Plenty of counterculture activities and events take place here, including cinema nights, art exhibitions, concerts, and dinners. There’s even a micro beer brewery at Vondelbunker you can visit called the Bunkerbier! And yes, we can verify that this is an actual bomb shelter from the Cold War!

The Fort Of Pampus Island

Located in Ijmeer, near Amsterdam, the fort of Pampus Island was built as a part of Amsterdam’s defence line in the late 19th century. You can now visit this abandoned fort and even enjoy dinner and drinks during exclusive events! Pampus Island is accessible by ferry from Muiden or Amsterdam.

Ons Lieve Heer op Solder

If we’re going to list down hidden spots in Amsterdam, we’re not leaving out Ons Lieve Heer op Solder! Did you know that this 17th century house has a secret Catholic church in the attic? This building is now a delightful museum where tourists can explore the old Catholic church and the original canal house.

Whether you feel like having a glass of wine at a secret bar, exploring an island, or visiting a clandestine Catholic church, Amsterdam is the place to be to discover hidden places.
