7 Essentials For Every Travelling Photographer

Shout out to every travelling photographer out there. You guys create the most gorgeous content for every Instagramer to feast their eyes on. And for that, we thank you. To show our appreciation, and to help you plan that awesome adventure, we asked fellow photographer and travel enthusiast, Louw Lemmer (@louwlemmer), for a list of essentials that he, and every travelling photographer, should pack.

After doing a two-week road trip in Namibia, here are the items Louw says saved the day, and the items that every travelling photographer should have on hand:

Equipment

Include even the tiniest and seemingly insignificant cable that you might need. Trust me, you will need it at some point, and without being 100% sure that you have it, you will regret not making sure it was packed.

More specifically, a Power Bank

This device saved many days for me in Namibia (and ever since). My phone’s battery is important for a couple of reasons, namely: I am very serious about staying in touch with loved ones and I do quite a lot of video documentation for social media and family vlog purposes. A dead phone is absolutely useless, which is why the power bank was an essential device throughout my trip.

Clothing

Yes, this one is obvious. Please make sure everything is packed, if not for you, do it for the sake of the rest of the group. I mean, no one wants to smell you in the same clothes every day.

A list of general supplies

This is really important. When you go out to shop for your travel supplies, take a note with everything you will need on it. One of the most inconvenient things while travelling, is to find out that you forgot toothpaste, floss or whatever it might be. Because small things matter. And not being able to keep track of the tiny essentials will inconvenience and annoy you.

A list of places to see

As a photographer, I really need this one. Not because I don’t care enough about the location I go to, but because I am so easily distracted by current beauty that I might forget about another key location I want to see. Thus, keeping tabs on the spots you want to stop at and the key photos you want to get, will go a long way to ensuring that you’re happy at the end of our travels.

Medical supplies

Trust me, think ahead when it comes to this one. You never know what might happen to you, whether it’s your body not agreeing with the water or food, to a foreign flu bug infecting you. Plan for as many situations possible. The last thing you want is to be stuck without any means to treat pain or an upset stomach. Pack those medicines.

Google Maps Offline

I really hope you take this tip seriously, especially if you’re going to a different country or somewhere with limited internet coverage. In today’s world we hardly ever think of actually using a map. We’ve become so used to how connected we are. As a result, it has become very easy to get lost when you lose internet coverage. Which is why I urge you to pre-download an offline version of wherever you might be going.
