5 Ways To Celebrate The 1st Weekend Of March In Cape Town

Does anyone else feel like February was a lot longer than usual? I mean, I know it was only 28 days, but guys… I am seriously stoked that payday has finally come and gone and we’ve moved on to March. Blame it on the post-festive-season bills. It’s a fresh new month, and this weekend there’s loads on the calendar – so here’s our pick of fun events to get involved in.

1. Century City Sports Festival (2 – 5 March)

Dust off your takkies and round up the kids, because this four-day event has something for everyone. Whether you’re into touch rugby, SUPing, or just want to take part in the fun run, the Century City Sports Festival will provide weekend-long entertainment. There are great prizes up for grabs, and we hear that some lucky winners will get their sweaty hands on the Entertainer app. Wink wink. And if you’re feeling a bit weary from all the activity, head to Life Day Spa for some me-time – it’s just around the corner.

2. Paarl Ommiberg Round the Rock Festival (4 March)

This annual event features nine wine estates, which each offer a different event or activity. To celebrate the harvest, visitors can stomp grapes, relax under the trees to the sound of local musicians, munch on some delicious food – and, of course, taste some fab wines. If you’re not a Paarl local, check in at Diamant Estate for a good night’s rest before heading back to the city.

3. Art Africa Fair (24 Feb – 5 March)

Art buffs, get yourselves down to the V&A Waterfront for a dynamic exhibition that showcases some of the most inspiring African work around. The line-up of curators include Salimata Diop (Senegal/France), Uche Okpa-Iroha (Nigeria), Pierre-Christophe Gam (Cameroon/France/United Kingdom), Thembinkosi Goniwe and Ruzy Rusike (South Africa). After feeding your soul with African art, it’s a short walk to Karibu, where you can feed your belly with African food and wine.

4. Cape Town International Animation Festival (3 – 5 March)

This is the sixth year that the city will be hosting the festival, which celebrates all things animation. Enjoy a selection of award-winning animated films, workshops and masterclasses on offer, or partake in the student competitions or outreach programme. Fuel up for a day of creative inspiration at Billy Boo’s, famous for excellent coffee and light-as-air pastries – and just a short walk away from the festival venue.

5. Hot Water Live at De Waal Park (5 March)

They’ve just completed a tour of India, and they’re back to serenade local fans on their home turf this weekend. Make your way to De Waal Park for Hot Water’s free (yes, FREE) concert on Sunday, and make sure to bring friends, family and pets along too. Turn it into a full day of fun by starting off with brunch down the road. Knead breakfast pizza, anyone?

Well, there you have it – you’d be mad as a March Hare to stay home this weekend. So get off the couch and let’s celebrate the new month.
