HK’s Best Picnic Spots

Picnic Spots | As surprising as it sounds, yes, picnic spots exist in the world’s most vertical city! Living in small flats, we Hong Kongers treat ourselves to eating out every once in a while for a breath of fresh air and a bit more room around the dining table, but why not take eating out to the next level by having your meals with a scenic landscape around you?

We scoured the city for the best picnic spots so all you have to do is pack your gingham mat, dust your wicker basket and prepare your favorite snacks and sandwiches for an outdoor feast fit for any occasion.

HK’S Best Picnic Spots

Tamar Park

The grass is always greener on this side of the harbour. Designed with the concept of “perpetual green,” this urban park in Admiralty boasts huge lawns for your picnic feast. A popular spot to watch the Chinese New Year fireworks, lay down your mats and sit facing the promenade for a stunning view of the harbour in front of you and marvel at the Central skyline that includes the IFC and the Observation Wheel on your left, especially at night.

Chung Hom Kok Beach

Sunny days bring everyone out just like you, which means beaches are going to be crowded. Head to the South of Hong Kong island and just before Stanley, you’ll find a small secluded beach down some stairs off the road, past a small park. Enjoy your private picnic in between relaxing swims. Barbecue pits are available as well as a playground for the little ones.

Victoria Park

Victoria Park is the largest park on Hong Kong island. It’s a popular venue for seasonal exhibitions like the Hong Kong Flower Show and the Chinese New Year Fair. On regular days, it is a multi-purpose public park with basketball and tennis courts, a jogging path, central lawn, ponds for remote-controlled boats, several playgrounds and a public pool complex – great things to keep the little ones entertained whilst allowing the grown ups to work up an appetite for a picnic.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park

This waterfront park in Sai Ying Pun is jam-packed with things to do. The expansive lawn allows kids to kick balls around or fly kites and grownups to attend free yoga classes before the picnic. Take advantage of the basketball courts and football pitches East of the park or the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Center to the West, or simply kick back and enjoy a spot of people watching against the stunning Victoria Harbour.

Kwun Tong Promenade

This urban park, developed from what used to be the home of waste paper recycling businesses is Kwun Tong’s answer to Sai Ying Pun’s waterfront park. The park features an ampitheatre, fitness stations, viewing pavilions, a children’s play area and a tower resembling a stack of waste paper to symbolize the area’s history. The tower is a sight to behold at night when it lights up in neon colors.

Inspiration Lake

True to its name and the whimsical character of its neighbour, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, this 30-hectare piece of land truly inspires with its breathtaking artificial lake, well-manicured lawns, fountains and waterfalls. Burn the picnic food calories using the centre’s pedal boats, bikes, 1500m jogging path, exercise areas or enjoy a stroll in the arboretum.
