Mindful Fashion

“Mindful fashion” is no longer just about not wearing fur, what with all the controversy lately surrounding silk, cashmere, mohair, feathers, down, bone, teeth or shell.

Materials used is just one issue. Wastefulness is another. A provocative exhibition uncovering the dark shadow of fashion, called “Y Waste?” was held at K11 Art Mall in 2015. The central installation contained 360kg of discarded secondhand clothes representing the amount of textiles dumped into Hong Kong’s landfills every two minutes – and that was three years ago. (Watch the video HERE.)

These, then, beg the questions – What can we wear? How may we consciously consume?

We’ve had a brainstorm here at ENTERTAINER HK HQ; see if you agree with us. If you think of other ways to be mindful in our fashion consumption, do sound off in the Comments section below. We’d love to hear from you.

Wear Classics: kapok

Multiple locations
kapok’s ‘future classics’ is a gender free label focusing on refined essentials. It was created by no less than the team running the kapok retail stores, with the goal to put together the perfect wardrobe for the Asian climate and way of life. It’s casual wear built to withstand trends – the antidote to fast fashion. Most of the items are made from cotton, making them sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable.

Love Preloved: Label Chic

Unit A, 3rd Level, Gough Plaza, 33 Gough Street, Central
New isn’t always best. In a similar way that humans are encouraged to adopt rather than buy a pet, the folks at Label Chic – HK’s first pre-owned French fashion boutique – would like to inspire us to wear second-hand fashions. Label Chic’s founder, Heloise Mendes, even conducts a “Wardrobe Detox” workshop where participants learn how to organize, recycle and complete their wardrobe. Choose Sustainable: Bamboa Home

S304, Tower A, PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central
This place isn’t just for home ware. They also sell apparel and accessories (t-shirts and sunglasses below) made with – you guessed it – bamboo. Bamboo fabric’s antibacterial quality keeps us odour-free and feeling and smelling fresh through HK’s nefarious humidity. The fabric is also highly sweat absorbent and keeps us dry longer. Bamboo is fast-growing and creates elegant yet practical products. The pieces you see here are made by rural communities across Southeast Asia.

One last thing. There’s little appeal to mindful fashion if it breaks your wallet. The whole point is sustainability. If you’re going to spend, win big savings at all of the above 7 days a week, all year long. Get ENTERTAINER 2018, bundled FREE with Cheers 2018, by using promo code HUBHK2018 upon checkout.
