Hong Kong Living Treasures Part 2

In Part 1 of Hong Kong Living Treasures, we presented enduring, traditional icons of our city’s culture and heritage. Here, now, in Part 2, we present contemporary icons.

What exactly are “Hong Kong living treasures?”

Get ready to be wowed as we take you on a walking tour in a familiar place. But this time, walk slowly. Put your phones down. Look up. You might be surprised at what Hong Kong living treasures you might find – contemporary art and culture – that you miss every morning as you rush to work. You may not be getting a banker’s salary but you’ll be getting a wealth of creativity, history and extraordinary experiences once you open your eyes and mind to the hidden artistic gems that are right under your noses. We’ve listed five of them below.

Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre

A former factory estate in Shek Kip Mei that has been converted into an art colony, the JCCAC is home to more than 100 artists who create a broad range of art forms from painting to film to glass art. Also noteworthy is, the building itself is a piece of art that earned the Medal of the Year from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects for its efforts in preserving its original attributes even after the conversion. This makes it a true example of Hong Kong living treasures.

PMQ

This white complex along the slope of Aberdeen Street was a school in the late 19th century and the Hollywood Road Police Married Quarters in 1951 before it became the haven for artists, designers and creative enterprises that it is today. Check out the event calendar on their website before planning your visit to catch their fun workshops, events and exhibitions.

Graffiti / Street Art

No canvas? No problem. Artists take to the streets to express their ideas and statements through bold and colorful graffiti and murals. This form of art and expression is on the rise and spreading like wildfire across the region, but our favorites remain the “graffiti lane” along Argyle Street in Mongkok and the scattered street art in Sheung Wan and Central, and – probably the most Instagram-friendly of them all – the Graham Street wall.

Bank of China Tower

A bank? Really? Inspired by a bamboo plant, this building’s unique geometrical design makes it stand out from Hong Kong’s skyline. As a result it has caught Hollywood’s attention and has been featured in several blockbuster movies. Designed by I.M. Pei, “starchitect” of (amongst others) the Louvre Pyramid in Paris and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, the Bank of China Tower definitely counts as one of Hong Kong’s living treasures.

Dialogue in the Dark

Can you imagine Hong Kong without the neon lights or the view of skyscrapers? This one-of-a-kind exhibition takes you on a tour of Hong Kong in pitch black darkness. Let your other senses take control as you hear, smell, feel and even taste this wonderful city. Prepare for an eye-opening, pun intended, experience as you develop a newfound appreciation of your sense of sight and empathy for the visually impaired.
