Yoga Classes for Beginners

Curious about taking a yoga class? The most common objection I hear from friends and loved ones who are interested – but fearful! – to try yoga is, “I’m not flexible enough.” Yet, for every objection, yoga has undeniable benefits. From improved breathing and concentration to greater mobility along one’s joints and muscles, yoga’s rewards grow as one’s practice goes deeper.

If you’re not flexible enough (like any, normal office worker bee), all the more reason to take up yoga! I would just advise any yoga beginner to stay away from unattainable-looking yoga poses on Instagram. Never compare yourself with others and never hurt yourself. Yoga is not a competition; it’s a personal practice. There are no deadlines or targets to chase; you grow at your own pace.

Here now are our top picks of yoga studios with great classes for beginners.

Yoga Refine

4th Level, 17 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay
I’ve been to this charming yoga studio in Causeway Bay and I just loved it. From the soothing neutrals of its interiors to its cosy set-up, it feels very welcoming for a beginner. They limit classes to a maximum of ten students, which enables their teachers to offer more personalised attention and adjustment than you would normally get from one of the big-chain yoga studios.

The Yoga Room

Xiu Ping Comm Building, 104 Jervois St, Sheung Wan
This boutique yoga studio also focuses on small classes. They run over 100 group sessions per week including Hot Yoga, Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Mum & Baby Yoga, to name a few. They have friendly, international teachers from diverse backgrounds. For beginners, I suggest taking a Hatha class. The asanas (poses) are challenging, yet, taught at a slower pace than in an Ashtanga or Vinyasa class – so you really learn how to get into the poses and understand how each one feels in your body. That’s ?? me and my colleagues doing a transition from Downward Dog to Warrior I!

V Studio

4th Level, Si Toi Commercial Building, 62-63 Connaught Road West, Sheung Wan
This studio is better-known for its Bollywood classes but they also offer Alignment classes. “Alignment” in yoga simply means the ideal way that poses are done. Have you ever seen yoga diagrams with stick figures? That’s first-layer alignment – simply, what the body looks like on the outside in any pose. Second-layer alignment goes deeper – how do we move our body from the inside in order to get ourselves into the pose? Alignment therefore is not perfection, rather, a personal journey of curiosity and discovery. Along the way, props such as blocks, bolsters, belts, etc. (see example below) are used to assist us toward correct alignment.

Cosyoga

Multiple Outlets
With locations in Yau Ma Tei, Kwun Tong and Kwai Fong, this one’s especially for Kowloon dwellers. If you’ve ever been curious about yoga done on hammocks, here’s your chance. A hammock can typically hold up to 2,000 lbs. Rest assured it won’t rip and drop you with a loud thud. Aerial yoga has multiple benefits for beginners. First off, you’re hanging. It’s like being a kid all over again, which is a precious mindset we all work toward in our yoga practice. Secondly, the hammock is a safe “partner” for some yummy stretching. You’ll experience deeper flexibility as the hammock pulls you up and gravity pulls you down.
