Meeting ‘Beerista,’ Ronny Daswani

With the proliferation of bars specialising in craft beer these days, separating hype from substance can be daunting. So we went to craft beer expert, Ronny Daswani, to help us decipher the writings on bottles.

Craft beer talk with Ronny Daswani

Ronny Daswani calls himself a ‘beerista.’ The co-founder of Craftissimo (which also has a branch in TST) welcomed us into the Tai Ping Shan outlet. It’s decked out in lively graffiti, floor-to-ceiling stock of over 200 types of craft beer, beer taps and enormous 2L refillable ‘Growler’ bottles of Young Master from HK’s most awarded craft brewery.

Craftissimo has been named by RateBeer.com HK’s #1 hangout for craft beer lovers, three years in a row. It’s easy to see why. Apart from Ronny’s passion and deep knowledge for draught beer systems and the dizzying variety of products on display, Craftissimo has become kind of a default den for beer geeks. I live just around the corner from Craftissimo; it’s always teeming with locals and tourists alike, leisurely enjoying their brews before deciding on which ones to take home. It’s a lively but laid back, photogenic locale.

Ronny delighted us by picking the Top 3 craft beers he thinks everyone should try right now. Among his intriguing picks…

  • Freshie Salt & Pepper by the renowned Nomad brewery in Australia. This one’s brewed with Australian sea water with a little bit of pepper;
  • Cha Chaan Teng Gose by HK brewer, Young Master. This one’s been brewed with 8-month preserved lemons; and
  • Modus Operandi, brewed in the UK. It’s fermented with wild yeast and and aged in oak barrels, which gives it a fruity character, primarily cherries.
