Athleisure Focus: Gourami

Athleisure – that nebulous type of casual clothing meant to transition seamlessly from exercising to general use – is so popular, it has become its own apparel category. We get up close with Jacqueline Yau and Flora Fong, the co-founders of homegrown athleisure brand, Gourami.

The athleisure market is worth an estimated USD270 billion globally. It comes as no surprise therefore that a pair of entrepreneurial cousins are tapping into their family’s over 50-year history in manufacturing, to create their own athleisure label.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, Jacqueline and Flora are both working mothers to two young children.

“We’ve always been attracted to the North American and European designs that we see,” Flora shares. “But it’s difficult to find activewear of these designs that fit our Asian bodies right.” And thus Gourami came to be.

“Our brand motto is Active wear for active being. We take our inspiration from global fashion trends and inject that into our activewear, designed with an Asian fit,” Jacqueline explains.

Both ladies manage every aspect of design, sourcing and production to ensure premium products at reasonable prices. The product range includes athleisure staples, like cover-up tops, leggings, swimwear, tanks and more. And there’s some truly joyful choices for kids and men (!), too, which makes Gourami truly a one-stop athleisure shop. How can you not be inspired to go out there, get your blood pumping, and stay on top of your 2018 fitness resolutions wearing Gourami?

“A healthier, active lifestyle is the best form of preventative medicine,” Jacqueline concludes. And fine words of encouragement, too.
