Do Mother’s Day A Little Differently This Year

She’s the reason you’re here, and she deserves to be spoilt. So put down those flowers you bought at the garage and celebrate your mom a little differently this weekend. Because Mother’s Day doesn’t have to slightly wilted carnations and toast in bed – it can be a chance to get out and explore your city with your mama. (And everyone knows carnations are for funerals. You’re better than that).

CAPE TOWN

13 May: Mother’s Day Croissant Masterclass

A morning spent elbow-deep in buttery pastry, drinking MCC and gossiping with my fave lady? Count me in. Loaves on Long are hosting their exclusive croissant masterclass on Saturday and it sounds like heaven on earth. You get to take your batch home with you (for showing off purposes) and all moms get 50% off the course. I’ll be starting my day with a smoothie at Bread Milk & Honey to offset some of the indulgence.

14 May: Slave Route Challenge Half Marathon

Before you toss your laptop out the window at the mere mention of having to run a marathon this weekend, relax – you can walk it. In fact, the challenge is so much more than a sporting event… it’s a chance to experience South Africa’s history on foot. Each person who registers will complete the event on behalf of one of the 8000 names on the Column of Memory at The Iziko Slave Lodge, thereby honouring a specific person. It’s a truly meaningful way to spend the day wandering through Cape Town with your mom.

JOHANNESBURG

13 May: Family Folk Music Festival

Set up your umbrella and chairs and enjoy your favourite SA bands, while feasting on oysters and sampling treats from the food trucks… Mother’s Day has never been cooler. Did I mention there will be a fire-dancing display as the sun sets? Make sure she’s nice and relaxed before the event by treating her to a massage at Life Day Spa.

14 May: Mother’s Day Lunch at A La Bouffe

Although you can’t use your Entertainer app on Mother’s Day, you can enjoy a French-inspired feast at the gorgeous A La Bouffe for Mother’s Day. They’re offering a special three-course menu for the occasion, at just R205 per person. And there’s a 99% chance it’ll be more delicious than the store-bought lasagne you were going to heat up for lunch. I see you.

DURBAN

13 May: The Litchi Orchard Market

There’s nothing like a market to bond my mom and I over local food and handcrafted goodies. And the Litchi Orchard Market happens to be on this Saturday! Just in time for some much-needed mom time. So take a drive to Salt Rock in search of the market’s fresh food and chilled vibes, and don’t forget to use your Entertainer at Scoop Ice Cream before you leave.

14 May: European Film Festival

Sunday marks the last day of this iconic film fest, so best you get to Gateway for a taste of this year’s most beautiful European cinema. And you better let your mama choose the movie.

Well, there you have it – no excuse for a less than legendary Mother’s Day weekend. What have you got planned for the leading lady in your life?
