6 Winter Events You Can’t Miss This Weekend

Yes, it’s chilly outside. But is that an excuse to curl up on the couch and tap out of life? Well, yes, of course it is. I support a solid Netflix-and-pizza-fuelled weekend as much as anyone. However, there are loads of winter events happening across the country over the next few days. You owe it to your self-esteem to throw on some layers and get out the house for a bit. (An icy breeze does wonders for the complexion.)

So, we rounded up 6 winter events that defy the cold and will make your weekend.

Because we’re fun like that.

CAPE TOWN

13 July: Meet The Brewers at Beerhouse

This month, our favourite yellow pub is hosting 5 local breweries for a cosy evening of beer tasting and food pairing. The guest speaker is John Palmer (“How to brew” author) and all beers will be paired by Piet Marais, Ultimate Braai Master. If you end up having one too many, check in at the quirky HomeBase Cape Town Backpackers for the night. It’s just down the road.

15-16 July: Franschhoek Bastille Day Festival

Set against the backdrop of the historic Huguenot Monument, Bastille Festival is a flagship event in every Capetonian’s calendar. Dust off your berets and get ready for 2 days of decadent food, gorgeous views, and – of course – plenty of warming reds. While you’re in the area, why not pop in at some of the fun spots we’ve got on the Entertainer app in Franschhoek?

JOHANNESBURG

14 July: La Fête Nationale at Stables Village Market

Not to be outdone by Franschhoek, Jozi is hosting its own Bastille Day festival at the Stables Village Market. Gather the fam and join in the festivities – it’s an event made for lounging on picnic blankets and sippin’ on French wine. As it’s nearing the end of the school holidays, make time to spoil the kids on the way by visiting nearby Life Day Spa Kids.

15 July: Mandela Day Yoga

Yogis across Joburg are invited to congregate at the historic Constitution Hill, where you’ll work through 27 yoga poses in honour of the late Nelson Mandela. The poses are reminiscent of his strength and compassion: hero pose, humble warrior pose, mountain pose, fierce pose and more. And we all know that doing yoga in winter is hungry work, so I’d recommend popping in at 86 Public for some post-downward-dog chow.

DURBAN

15 July: Portrait Drawing with Dane Stops

Master a new skill by attending the KZN SA Gallery’s latest Saturday Session, which happens to be one of my favourite winter events. For just R200, you’ll get materials, refreshments and guidance from one of our country’s best. Plus, you can easily make a day of it by booking lunch at the nearby Sushi Corner or Spoonful Eatery.

13-23 July: The Durban International Film Festival

This iconic festival offers a fresh take on local & international stories through the medium of film, and is jam-packed with screenings you simply can’t miss. You’ll see in the full programme that quite a few are being held at Gateway this weekend, which means coffee and cupcakes at So Whipped before soaking up the incredible film-making 😉

Well, guys – looks like it’s time to push pause on Netflix, grab a scarf or three and head out for the weekend of your life. Share your experiences in the comments – and let me know if I missed any great winter events!
