Weekend Ideas Series: Nature Tripping in Yuen Long

For those of us who live on Hong Kong Island, Yuen Long sounds like a dreadful trek. The name itself seems to suggest that the travel time is going to be, at the risk of sounding corny, LONG. Ok, that’s probably pushing it. Names aside, this town in the northwestern part of New Territories proves that it is worth a weekend visit. With its traditional basin meals, timeworn walled and fishing villages, and handpicked organic produce, it gives the more popular New Territories district Sai Kung a run for its money.

Here are four ways you can make the most of your weekend jaunt to Yuen Long:

Go nature tripping in Nam Sang Wai

Make sure you bring a good camera as this place is a shutterbug’s paradise. Rent a bike before boarding the sampan (a small ferry) that will take you across the Shan Pui river to Nam Sang Wai. Practice your poses along the gum tree-lined path or capture the breathtaking scenery provided by the mangrove swamps, abandoned fish farms and mudflats. If you’re lucky, you might see different species of migratory birds, some mudskippers and crabs, and a few couples taking wedding photos!

Eat great Japanese-Hong Kong style sushi

Tired of paying a fortune for sushi that’s never enough to fill your bellies? Sushi Man to the rescue! Try one of their popular omakase sets. Omakase is a meal comprised of the chef’s selected dishes – in Sushi Man’s case, these dishes are some of the freshest sushi and plumpest sashimi in town, finished with a mountain of uni (sea urchin). With soup, steamed egg and dessert included, Sushi Man gives you the best bang for your buck.

Try local desserts at Sweet Button Desserts

After taking a stroll through the ancient walled villages of Yuen Long, take a break in Sweet Button Desserts for some artistic desserts and creative drinks. Get the Big Sweet Button Combo to try 5 treats picked by the chef and 3 mystery desserts. We heard rave reviews about the Sweet Button Dimsum and Lychee and Rose Port de Crème so don’t leave this cute, colorful café without trying them.

Let the kids (and big kids within) loose!

Yuen Long Park is a 7.5 hectare park on a hill in south-west Yuen Long. It has a children’s playground and an Aviary Pagoda atop the hill with panoramic views over Yuen Long as well as more than 100 birds of over 30 species. You’re more than welcome!
