Safari Getaway Near Cape Town: Buffelsdrift

It’s hard to find a safari getaway near Cape Town that suits the non-camping types but is still within a (fairly) reasonable budget. My husband and I were lucky enough to find a hidden gem called Buffelsdrift, a mere 5-hour drive from Cape Town, in the heart of the Klein Karoo.

It was a weekend getaway I will never ever forget. A dream come true. Up until today I still cannot believe I got a selfie with an elephant (like, what? I know). Here are 7 reasons why you need to visit Buffelsdrift.

1 | Why camp when you can glamp?

Buffelsdrift is known to offer a unique South African Bushveld experience – and that is exactly what we received. With the Swartberg Mountains as our weekend backdrop, and tame-ish springbok pottering around throughout the campsite, they offered us the choice of Luxury Tents by the waterhole or with a horizon view (family tents are available too). The tents were air-conditioned and equipped with a mini bar, hairdryer, telephone, free wifi, fully en-suite bathrooms, a safe and a private outdoor hot water shower.

2 | A safari experience to die for

With such beautiful accommodation, we had high expectations for the Safari Experience and our expectations were met. We were fortunate enough to witness a Rhino taunting us (scary but amazing), a grandpa giraffe chasing a young male away from “his” female companion, and buffaloes getting so close to the truck that we could see their bushy eyebrows. To top it off, we stopped for some pretty amazing sunset views. For a safari getaway near Cape Town, this is the real thing. We could’ve been in Botswana or Namibia if we didn’t know better.

3 | Food (stop reading and just go already)

We were then treated to a supper which my husband and I still talk about today. Burgers were ordered, and because I asked nicely, they set up a table for us right by the Chapel (yes, this is also a wedding destination) overlooking the waterhole. Ah, bliss. Also, the buffet breakfast was to die for. Good food? Tick!

Important note: Just as we thought dinner overlooking the waterhole was tops, we found the spa. Overlooking the waterhole. And our minds were made up: Buffelsdrift is the best safari getaway near Cape Town.

4 | Humane interactive animal experiences

On day 2 we met Jabari, Malaika and Bulelo, three of the loveliest giants I’ve met to date. We got to feed, rub and take photos with these beautiful elephants (warning: you will get dirty after an ellie embrace). Make sure to bring your camera with as you do not want to miss any moment. It’s not every day that you get to witness an “elephant kiss.” Buffelsdrift also offers brushing and guided walking tours with the elephants for a real interactive learning experience.

5 | Pool with a view

We headed to the pool because it was a scorcher of a day, and wow, were we impressed. Lazing in and around the pool whilst watching the hippos do the same, makes a day by the pool a must. The hotel provided extra towels and sunscreen in case you forget yours – extraordinary attention to detail is what made this place super memorable.

6 | Noisy nights (in a good way)

After a busy day, no one likes a noisy night. But at Buffelsdrift it’s different. The hippos came out to play! They are super noisy animals, and when you’re in bed it sounds as if they’re right by your window. That definitely is part of the wildlife experience and totally different to car horns and people playing loud music. But Buffelsdrift still has you covered. They supply ear plugs every night to block out any noise if you are struggling to sleep.

7 | Affordable safari getaway (is that even a thing?)

Although Buffelsdrift is more affordable than other safari getaways near Cape Town, it is still on the expensive side. What made this trip possible for us was the ENTERTAINER. We enjoyed 2 nights for the price of 1 when using the App, and we had an amazing experience. How many people can say they’ve saved money while ticking off a major bucket list activity?

If you’re looking for a getaway from the city hustle and bustle and you adore animals, then this is a place I highly recommend. I left feeling happy and overwhelmed at the same time, having experienced the best of what nature has to offer. I am utterly grateful to have had this pleasure.
